Torin Slaughter, J.I. Case High School
Torin Slaughter, a force to be reckoned with, tackled her school curriculum with a laser-focused approach to excellence and success. As an Academy Pathway candidate in Biomedical Science, she seized every opportunity to excel, from the International Baccalaureate Program to the National Honor Society, from softball to student government, and from community healthcare programs to her clear, defined goals in the healthcare and medical field. Her journey continues at the University of Indianapolis, where she plans to play collegiate softball while pursuing Athletic Training at the high school or college level. Torin's achievements, unique in their breadth and depth, are a shining example of the level of excellence and grit that Steve Case embodied during his years of teaching and coaching. |
Abdiel (Hugo) Arteaga, J.I. Case High School
Hugo Arteaga was a strong choice for this year’s scholarship not only because of his academic success but also because of his drive for improvement in his sport, swimming, and spending countless hours in the pool and in the training room. As a student in the Biomedical Science Academy Pathway, he quickly became a leader in the classroom by demonstrating core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Hugo is outgoing, intelligent, and highly motivated. With a deep interest in the medical field, he participated in a shadowing program at two local hospital ER departments while carrying a full academic load, swim team, orchestra, and volunteering at local swim meets. Hugo will attend the University of Indianapolis, where he plans to swim collegiately and pursue a degree in biology, which will lead to medical school. |

Big News from Case High!
Guess what? Valerie Harmon and Mateo Fuentes, two Case High grads, just snagged themselves a $1,200 scholarship each! The big reveal happened on May 31, and let me tell you, these two are something special. The scholarship carries the legacy of Steve Case, who dedicated nearly four decades of teaching and coaching in Racine Unified schools. The Case family set up this scholarship to honor high school seniors heading to college who've shone in sports, aced their studies, and made waves in their community. Valerie? She's the real deal. Academics, sports, clubs – you name it, she's led it and left things better than she found them. She's off to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, and we can't wait to see her shine even brighter. And Mateo – talk about inspiring! This guy has battled through thick and thin, impressing everyone with his grit and talent in multiple sports. He's not just a fantastic athlete; he's a beacon of positivity. Guess what? He's Wisconsin-Parkside-bound, too. Two stars from Case High, ready to rock the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Watch out, world – here come Valerie and Mateo! |

Ava Knaus, J.I. Case High School
It was easy to be impressed with Ava’s accomplishments in and outside the classroom. Her mental and physical persistence to succeed in academics and on the Girls’ Swim Team made her the ideal recipient for this award. Ava accomplished an excellent high school season on the team despite a devastating physical setback which would’ve discouraged the average student swimmer. However, her determination and persistance demonstrated excellent leadership qualities in herself and for the team as she overcame difficult a challenge. She is most deserving of this award. Ava will attend the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. We wish her all the best. Ezekiel King, Washington Park High School
Ezekiel is not your typical high school jock. He is a standout graduate with an extremely positive outlook, talent and leadership qualities. His amazing grit and work ethic has proven him greatly successful in the classrom and as a 4-sport letter winner. Zeke also overcame some difficult obstacles in life that could have affected his attitude and character. Instead he chose to pursue excellence in everything he did. One meeting with Ezekiel and you would know what we mean. We wish Ezekiel all the best as he attends the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. |

Sarah Kozenski, Walden III
Sarah is our first recipient from Walden III, a school that Steve Case greatly admired later in his teaching career. He loved that the school taught a hunger for learning, which was apparent in the Walden students he met. Sarah is no exception, and exemplifies a passion for academics, sports, and theater. What interested the committee most about Sarah, was that her sports and theater had to be done at other high schools as Walden doesn't have those options. She truly exemplified what Steve would call drive and determination for what she loved to do. We are excited to present the fifth SCM scholarship to this amazing young woman. Sarah will be attending UW-Lacrosse.
